A phrase meaning what a hypothetical person in a similar situation would do when exercising the amount of attention, knowledge, intelligence, and judgment society requires for the protection of their own interest and the interests of others.  This is the standard against which the allegedly at-fault person’s conduct is compared.  That person was negligent if they either failed to do something that a reasonable person would do, or did something a reasonable and prudent person would not do.
